The number of Russians learning Chinese is surpassing the number of overseas Chinese living in Russia. The director of School of Oriental & African Studies at Moscow State University made this remark at a press conference. It may seem an exaggeration but it reflects the Russian people’s real growing interest in Chinese.

An official with the Russian embassy in China said only 20 of Russia’s high schools and colleges offered Chinese classes 20 years ago but now more than 100 colleges have been approved by the authorities to teach Chinese. More high schools also take the initiative to teach Chinese. Students also learn Chinese independently at their own cost in addition to the two required foreign languages.
